This is caused by water ingress into concrete structures, such as retaining walls, concrete beams, concrete columns, suspended slabs, bridges, water channels, culverts, load-out facilities, machine bases, crane bases, conveyor footings, pedestals, building structures etc. Over time the water will cause the internal steel reinforcement to corrode, expand and cause the concrete to weaken and crack or crumble in a process called concrete spalling/cancer. If allowed to occur for a long period the structure can be weakened requiring considerable costly rectification. This may require concrete patching techniques or removal and replacement of the steel reinforcement and concrete in an area, and in advanced cases the full replacement of the structure.
